Bonner and Boundary County adult softball leagues face off in inaugural all-star series
SANDPOINT — Boundary County won the inaugural men’s all-star series between the Boundary and Bonner County adult softball leagues Friday, July 14 at Travers Park.
Boundary County won the three-game series, 2-1.
The Boundary County all-stars came out swinging; and, after four innings, they led 9-0. Bonner County’s Stephen Leddy broke the tie, hammering a two-run shot in the fifth inning. However, the deficit would prove to be too much as the Boundary County All-stars cruised to a 15-6 victory in Game 1.
Game 2 was a much closer contest between the two teams. Bonner County looked as if they turned a corner as they jumped out to an early three-run lead, and eventually led 8-7 after five innings of play, but the lead would not last. Late in the game, Boundary County’s Osa Orison hit a grand slam which was then followed by a Tyler Beachy three-run home run. Boundary County would go on to win 14-11.
The third and final game of the night resembled a home run derby. The teams traded home runs the entire game. After six innings, Boundary County led 15-13. The Bonner County all-stars team would ultimately come through with back-to-back-to-back home runs by Jim Pierce, Stephen Leddy, and Dan Thompson. Bonner County scored eight runs each in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure a 29-17 victory in Game 3.
Rodney Helmuth of the Boundary County all-star team was named MVP of the series.
“What a great evening this was,” Helmuth said. "We are all very grateful to be able to come out and compete in this beautiful place surrounded by family, friends and fans. It’s a lot of fun playing against quality teams like Bonner County. We look forward to doing it again next year.”
