Communication between county, community is critical
Re: Board of Bonner County Commission meeting, July 11, 2023.
Bob Howard (Emergency Management and Solid Waste) presented during an 8 a.m. meeting scheduled by Commissioner Asia Williams. He discussed solid waste and the need to transport waste to an Arlington, Ore., landfill. There are currently no landfills closer to Bonner County that will accept waste. They are currently exploring a possible landfill in Bonner County, which would save over $3,000,000 annually.
Commissioner Williams has scheduled presentations from other county departments. County Clerk Michael Rosedale spoke on Tuesday, July 18.
Steve Bradshaw, BOCC chairman and commissioner, arrived at 9 a.m. and, after participating in a prayer and pledge, read from a county ordinance why he does not have to allow for public comment. Commissioner Williams tried to challenge his decision. He said she could do whatever she wanted as he walked out of the room. Commissioner Luke Omodt started to walk out as well, but sat back down, commenting that he had planned to leave but felt it would be "rude" to leave while Commissioner Williams was speaking. After listening to Commissioner Williams, he left the room.
Commissioner Williams remained, answering questions and talking with those in attendance.
Commissioner Omodt later commented that "he was embarrassed by these meetings" and said "that includes the board, but that also includes some members of the public." He should be, and he should search within himself and the board for ways to solve this issue.
The meeting resumed at 10 a.m., and commissioners gave district reports. Chairman Bradshaw was not on the agenda to give a district report and did not offer one. Someone among those attending asked why he would not give a report. He only smiled.
The chairman and commissioners must come together as elected and compensated leaders and address issues occurring during meetings. Terminating the ability for members of the community to comment is not a solution. Not reporting to voters and taxpayers on district activities is not an option.
Chairman Bradshaw should lead commissioners and develop an environment during meetings that is peaceful and productive. He and the other commissioners should develop strategies to bring the community together during meetings. He was elected and paid to do that. Leadership is not easy, and there are no born leaders.
Thank you, Commissioner Williams, for bringing the community together and inviting department representatives to present prior to the normally scheduled meeting.
