July 25, 1973 – JIM JUDD SAVES BOY

A youth about nine years old was saved from drowning Thursday by local businessman James Judd, who was loading a boat at the city beach boat ramp with companions Rod Thurlow and Robert Moore. The unidentified youth was swimming nearby, and Judd advised him not to swim in the area because of boat traffic. The boy left the water, rested on a dock a short time, then re-entered the water and swam away from the ramp area. He started to struggle in the water and shouted for help. Judd dived fully clothed into the lake to aid the youth who sank below the surface several times before Judd reached him. The boy was brought ashore and disappeared soon thereafter. Judd believes the youth tired suddenly and became frightened.

SHAKE MILL DESTROYED BY FIRE

Blazing rubble was all that remained of Pend Oreille Shake & Shingle Co. mill eight miles northeast of Sandpoint last Thursday after a raging fire of unknown origin destroyed the structure on Shingle Mill Rd. Flaming debris touched off several spot fires in the surrounding woodland, which were spotted by Forest Service helicopters and quickly extinguished by ground crews. The mill was being operated by John Richter, who, with his family, resides in a nearby mobile home. The Richter home was not damaged and no injuries were reported.
