Man injured in crash
A collision between a semitruck and a passenger car sent a Spirit Lake man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and fire and rescue personnel responded around 7:30 a.m. to the intersection of W. Hayden Avenue and N. Meyer Road after receiving reports of a crash.
A preliminary investigation determined that a 1994 Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Meyer Road and failed to stop for the stop sign. A semitruck traveling westbound on Hayden Avenue hit the Honda as it entered the intersection.
Police identified the Honda driver as Hunter Syzdlowski, 22, of Spirit Lake. He was transported to Kootenai Health, police said, and remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.
Neither speed nor alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
While the roadway was closed for the investigation, police said several vehicles passed the barricades and nearly hit deputies.
Barricades are placed to keep workers safe and protect evidence, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Disobeying barricades can result in fines for the driver.
