June 18, 1973 – JIM DOAK TRANSFERRED

Rev. James Doak of United Methodist Church has been re-assigned to Stevenson, Wash. He will give his final sermons in Sandpoint next Sunday, speaking at First Presbyterian Church at the 9 a.m. service and at United Methodist at 10 a.m.

FFA JUDGING CONTEST

Ten SHS students will be in attendance when 500 FFA members from throughout Idaho converge on the U of I campus for the state judging contests. Participating in the two-day event will be Barbara Remson, Glenna Deeter, Steve Rasor, Joe Thacker, Cornel Rasor, Jed Turnbull, Dan Windecker, Pete Santino, Steve Hepperle, and Brian Dockins. Jack McHargue, local FFA advisor, said, “This is the first year we have had girls in the chapter, and it has been really good for the boys. They work harder because they don’t like being beat by a girl.”

PARSONS IS NEWEST EAGLE SCOUT

Jim Parsons, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Parsons II, became an Eagle Scout, scouting’s highest honor, in a recent ceremony at the Community hall. Parsons is a member of the crew of Sea Scout Ship 100. Vern Eskridge is skipper of the Sea Scout ship.

ELKS FLAG DAY PROGRAM

A large number attended the Elks Flag day program at the lodge auditorium. Lodge officers conducted the ritual with R.J. Bergeron presiding. Girl and Boy Scouts participated in the program bearing 12 flags, 11 of which preceded the nation’s current flag. Music was by the Treble Clef chorus.

NEARLY DROWNED NEAR CEMETERY

While hauling in driftwood logs with a boat and pike pole, Percy Ridley fell out of his boat and nearly drowned Friday near Lakeview cemetery, had it not been for Leonard Nystrom and Ralph Sands, who saved him as he was going down for the third time. Nystrom and Sands, who work at the cemetery, were eating lunch when they heard Ridley’s cries. Sands gave artificial respiration to Ridley, who was taken to his home nearby when he recovered.

ADM. SOLBERG NAMED RESEARCH HEAD

Announcement was made that President Truman has nominated atomic energy expert Rear Adm. Thorvald A. Solberg, 52, a Sandpoint native, as the navy’s new chief of research, for a three-year term.
