| June 21, 2023 1:00 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — The Spirit Lakes Parks and Recreation Department is ready for a summer under the stars, as the city brings back Family Movie in the Park series, starting Saturday at 6:30 p.m., at Volunteer Park, 5601 Jefferson and 10th streets. This year’s series is presented by Intermax Networks, a local internet provider for the greater Spirit Lake community.

“This year’s series is going to be bigger and better than ever,” said Mitzi Michaud, Spirit Lake Parks and Recreation director. “We’ve curated a diverse selection of films that will cater to all tastes and preferences. Whether you’re a fan of classic movies, animated adventures or blockbuster hits, we guarantee an unforgettable evening of entertainment for everyone in the community.”

From family-friendly adventures to heart-pounding blockbusters, the series will bring something for everyone.

The kickoff is “The Goonies,” and event sponsor Intermax Networks has arranged a special video introduction by lead actor Sean Astin.

Astin also starred in “Rudy," "The Lord of the Rings,” “Stranger Things,” and many other movies and TV shows.

“We are excited to partner with the good folks of Spirit Lake to provide a family-friendly event for the community to enjoy,” Intermax sales and marketing manager Jamè Davis said.

The Parks and Rec team will also open each night with a family-friendly activity before the movie begins at dusk.

Movie showings and activities include:

June 24 – “The Goonies” and Family Scavenger Hunt

July 28 – “Shark Tales” and Wacky Water Games

Aug. 19 – “Hook” and Baseball/Kickball and Peter Pan Food Fight.

The Family Movie in the Park Series aims to create an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Families and friends are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, lawn chairs and cozy setups to enjoy the movies comfortably.
