Priest River track & field has record setting day in West Valley

WEST VALLEY – Priest River track and field finished 15th out of 27 teams as the Spartans faced some of the best competition in Washington and Idaho on Saturday, March 25 at the Dolphin Invitational.

All things considered, it was quite impressive what the squad accomplished this past weekend as head coach Jared Hughes said 25 out of Priest River’s 32 student-athletes set personal or season records at the meet. The team was not able to attend an invitational in Lewiston on Thursday due to a bus breakdown, but that did not seem to rattle their confidence.

"'Get better every day’ is a team motto of ours and this meet was a great indicator that we are on the right track,” Hughes said.

In the javelin throw, an event that is not a part of Idaho track and field, Allyson Barton was able to set a new school record with a throw of 71’ 6. She also won the discus throw with a mark of 114’ 0 and placed eighth in the shot put.

“This year, with written permission from the IDHSAA we were able to throw javelin at Washington meets for the first time ever. Hopefully at the April IDHSAA board meeting they will pass the proposal to bring the event back to Idaho for the first time in over 40 years,” Hughes said.

Sticking with the field events, Matyus McLain won the shotput and discus throw for the boys; it is safe to say that no competitors came close to his marks of 47’ 3 and 126’ 1, respectively.

Seniors Ethan Korff and Blake Miller led the way in the jumping events. Korff placed 13th in high jump and 14th in the long jump. Miller took 14th in high jump and 14th in triple jump. In the girls high jump, Kylee Swoboda placed sixth and Elisheva Davis finished in ninth place.

On the track, Allyson Dickinson placed 12th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.12. Lizzie McCracken took 18th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:47.68. For the men, Grant Schofield finished 26th with a new PR of 25.39 in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Brayden Lamanna got close to breaking 5 minutes in the mile with a time of 5:00.86 putting him in 25th place.

“While our overall finish doesn't sound so impressive, we stepped up in competition by attending this 27 team meet with 8 GSL schools from Spokane. Almost every athlete we had set a season or lifetime best,” Hughes said.

The Spartans are proving they are a force to be reckoned with after a solid showing this week, and a fourth-place finish at the Bonners Ferry Invitational on Saturday, March 18. Hughes and the rest of the Priest River coaching staff will prepare their athletes for the Glenn Wolf Invitational on March 31 at Deer Park High School.
