PRIEST RIVER – The Spartans lost three baseball games in the past week — two away games to Kellogg and one home game to Riverside.

On Tuesday, April 25, the Spartans traveled to Kellogg to take on the Wildcats in an afternoon doubleheader. Priest River lost the first game 13-1 and the second game, 10-0.

In Game 1, Priest River was limited to just one hit in the contest. Shayd Wong-Yuen was able to single in the top of the third which resulted in the Spartans only run on the day.

On the mound, Priest River only gave up six hits. Colton Brooks threw for two one-thirds innings, giving up six hits, 12 runs (seven earned) while striking out six batters. Landon Reynolds only gave up one hit and struck out two Wildcats over two and two-thirds innings of work.

Kellogg was led by Logan Smith who had a three-run homerun in the second inning; he had two hits and four RBIs in Game 1. Austin Clapper and Riply Luna combined for the one-hitter on the mound for the Wildcats in the 13-1 victory.

In Game 2, Smith threw a perfect five innings for the Wildcats. Smith dominated in the 10-0 win over the Spartans giving up zero hits, zero runs while striking out 12 Spartans.

The Wildcats had a big second and third inning, scoring three and five runs respectively, to put the game out of reach.

On the mound, Wong-Yuen and Logan Troumbly posted solid lines for the Spartans despite the loss. Troumbly went three innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, and recording two strikeouts. Wong-Yuen pitched one and two-thirds innings giving up five hits, one earned run, and two walks.

On Friday April 28, the Spartans played their final home game of the regular season against Riverside, losing 19-8.

After two full innings, the Spartans only trailed 5-4. However, the team gave up 10 in the third which resulted in a 15-4 deficit they were unable to overcome.

In his last home game, senior Charles Bennett got his first ever start on the mound. He threw one inning giving up one hit, one earned run, and struck out two batters.

“This was Charles’ last home game for us; he has played the last two years for us. He is a hard-working young man on the field and a great teammate. Charles is a great leader and he will be missed next year,” head coach Mark Schultz said.

The Spartans (0-16) will be back in action at the District 2A championships on May 9 and 10 in Orofino.
