| May 9, 2023 1:00 AM

North Idaho College’s Math Education Center and NIC at Sandpoint will host a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Summer Camp from June 26 to 30 in Sandpoint.

The five-day summer camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at NIC at Sandpoint’s campus and at the Panida Theater. It is open to students who are 14 to 18 years old or who will be in ninth to 12th grade or its equivalent.

Registration is open for the free camp through May 16. Apply online at nic.edu/mec. Space is limited to 24 students, and students will be notified of their acceptance status by late May or early June.

S.T.E.A.M. Summer Camp will provide a space for students to collaborate on an intensive research project to solve a relevant issue in our community. Students will pick a project in one of eight topics:

• Artistic and Educated Scavengers

• Plastic Pollution Solutions Team

• Health and Wellbeing Advocates

• Scientist, Programmer and Composer Mashup

• Groundwater and The World of Conservation

• Road Stabilization and Repair Research Team

• Affordable Community Shelter and Habitat

• Green Community Spaces for a Healthy Life

Students will work together in teams to act as researchers and inventors to explore, research, plan, experiment and build their projects with assistance and guidance from experts from NIC and the nonprofit makerspace Gizmo-Coeur d’Alene. Each team will present their work to their families and guests at a public showcase at the Panida Theater on the last day of camp.

The camp is sponsored by the NIC Foundation and Gizmo.
