Cellphones, youth, and today's world

| May 10, 2023 1:00 AM

In the store, I have mentioned to numerous customers that we have been trying to get a high school boy to work at the store, but haven’t had any luck.

We have even posted a notice on the high school bulletin board and the principal has put the word out, but still no response. The most common response from the customers is that kids nowadays, don’t want to work, they are supported by their parents for cellphones and cars.

Unfortunately, this isn’t just Priest River, it is all over the country. Help wanted signs all over, but too many people just don’t want to work. Young kids don’t realize, and apparently don’t care, that the habits they are forming now, will follow them all their lives.

In regards to this situation with young people, a while back, I went to a meeting in Spokane where a speaker said the biggest culprit was the cellphones. Kids are in continual contact with one another, and thus meet with one another, so they don’t have time or the desire to work or participate in community volunteer work. It sure is a different situation than when most of us adults and senior citizens were growing up. We didn’t get handouts and we had to work for the things we wanted. We developed a good work ethic because of this.

Compare this to today’s situation. One comment on TV about this situation, was “for parents to quit paying for their kid’s cellphone, and subsequent charges” and they will go out and get a job quick, as they can’t be without it. I don’t have one and get along just fine.

This situation and lots of other reasons are why this country going down the tubes. Changes need to be made, or there will be bad results for this country.
