Shea is the obvious choice for library board

| May 12, 2023 1:00 AM

Susan Shea is the obvious choice to vote for the library board.

With six years of outstanding performance on the current library board, helping with the fiscal responsibility of funding, a 30-plus year residency in Bonner County, endorsed by all the current library board members, Susan Shea will continue to support our beautiful, well-used, extensive community library. In addition, Susan Shea strongly supports the First Amendment: freedom of speech and of the press.

If people are so concerned with books that might be questionable for their children, then I am sure you are by their side as they check out books from our public libraries. Book banning has a dark history and when I read the list of books banned then and now, I stand taken aback. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “1984,” “Animal Farm,” “Of Mice and Men,” “The Catcher in the Rye,” “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” “Beloved,” “The Grapes of Wrath,” “The Lord of the Rings,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “The Call of the Wild” … this list is from 12 pages of books banned in recent years (Barnes & Noble’s website). Blew my mind!

I’m with Dwight Eisenhower, who said, “Don’t join the book burners. Don’t think you’re going to conceal faults by concealing evidence that they ever existed. Don’t be afraid to go in your library and read every book …” Now, I need to find time to do more reading of these banned books.

Vote for choice. Vote for preserving the First Amendment. Vote for experience. Vote for Susan Shea on May 16.
