County readies for Tuesday election

SANDPOINT — There is something for everyone in Tuesday's election.

From a trio of levy questions, an East Bonner County Library Board election, and board elections for the Pend Oreille Hospital District, every precinct in the county has something on the ballot, Bonner County Clerk Michael Rosedale said.

"Tuesday, May 16, is Election Day in Bonner County," Rosedale said. "I hope everyone turns out to vote. All precincts are open and everyone has something to cast a vote on.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Nearly 80% of the county will be voting on the East Bonner County Library Trustee position as well as the Pend Oreille Hospital District Trustee positions.

Elsewhere on the ballot is a contested race for a seat on the East Bonner County Library Board between incumbent Susan Shea and challenger Stacy Rodriguez. The seat is for a six-year term.

The Pend Oreille Hospital District race has four seats on the ballot and five candidates. Incumbents Bart Casey, Tim Cochran and James Frank are all seeking re-election; the trio are joined by Cynthia Busé and Dwayne Sheffler on the ballot.

The West Bonner County School District is asking voters to approve a two-year levy seeking $4.7 million per year. The levy needs a simple majority to pass. The estimated annual cost to taxpayers would be $115.95 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value.

The Lakeland Joint School District 272, which includes a small portion of Bonner County, has two measures on the ballot. The first is a school plant facilities reserve fund levy seeking up to $1,146,520 per year for two years to maintain and repair existing schools. In the other, the district is rerunning a supplemental levy for $9.5 million per year for two years.

The levy would cost an estimated $106 per $100,000 of assessed value.

Rosedale said the county sent out 1,545 absentee ballots and has received 1,211 of those back. In addition, another 702 people voted early.

The deadline to vote early has passed and voters will need to head to the polls to vote.

The county has a total of 31,415 registered voters. All registered voters will be eligible to vote in this election

"I hope I see you all at the polls," Rosedale said.

Residents will be able to watch the action online at the county elections website at bit.ly/BonnerCountyElections.

Anyone not registered to vote can register at the polls. They will need to bring an official ID and something that proves they live at that address. The idea is to match the name with a face and the name with an address so all three triangulate, Rosedale said.

Photo identification can include a driver's license, school IDs, passports, military cards, concealed carry permits and tribal cards. Address identification can include a mortgage statement, lease agreement, bank statement or a power bill.

"Before you head out the door, if you have any questions, give us a call," Rosedale said. "It may save you a world of heartache."
