LEWSITON — After competing in nine events on Thursday in Coeur d’Alene, and nine events in Lewiston on Friday, Sandpoint girls and boys track and field both captured the 4A regional title by large margins.

The girls won the meet with 83 points; their first title since 2018. The boys reclaimed the title with 76 points after losing a close meet to Moscow last year. 23 Bulldogs qualified for the 4A state championship.

“We were really prepared for this meet,” head coach Matt Brass said. “These coaches and athletes deserve a ton of credit for all of their hard work this season.”

On the boys side of things, the distance squad took home 30 out of 33 available points. Junior Daniel Ricks won the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:14.07, almost a full minute faster than his time at this meet last year. Freshman standout Callahan Waters finished in second place with a 10:15.87.

In the 1600-meter run, Sandpoint finished 1-2-3-4 with a spread of just 6.9 seconds. Nathan Roche won the race with a new personal record of 4:31.02. As if that was not impressive enough, boys distance finished first through fifth in the 800-meter run. Roche won the 800 as well with a time of 2:02.94.

In the sprints, it was Ryder Haynes who tied for first place in the 100-meter dash with a new personal record of 11.41 seconds. Rusty Lee helped the Bulldogs win four events on the day. Lee won the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, the high jump, and anchored the winning sprint medley relay. Lee set a new personal record in the high jump with a jump of 6-4.

On the field, the Bulldogs continued to dominate and set more records. Klein Fragoso was the only vaulter over 14 feet; he won the event with a new personal record of 14-1. His brother, Slate Fragoso, placed third with a vault of 13-1. Sandpoint also finished 2-3-4 in the shot put and discus. Issac Vermeer led the way in both events with throws of 42-1 and 111-2, both new personal records for the sophomore.

“We thought the boys were going to be in a much closer fight for the title, but they really pulled away. I’m super proud of them,” Brass said.

As impressive as the boys were, the girls were even more dominant for Sandpoint. Maren Davidson led the way by winning four events for the Bulldogs. Davidson won the 800-meter run, and helped the sprint medley, 4x400 relay, and 4x200 relay finish in first. She will look to take down her older sister’s school record in the 800-meter run at the state championship next weekend, a time she is only a hundredth of a second behind.

Lily Richardson may have been the first Bulldog to win the 3200-meter run and place second in the 300-meter hurdles. Richardson won the 3200 with a time of 11:54.32, a new personal record. She also set a new personal record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.83 seconds. Brass believes she would make a great 3000-meter steeplechase runner one day if she were to pursue it; it would be hard to argue against that.

In the sprints, senior Anna Reinink won the 100 and 200-meter dash. Reinink set a new personal record in the 200 with a time of 26.59.

On the field, the girls pole vault went 1-2-3, something they have been able to do at every meet this season. Junior Devin McDaniel won the event with a new best mark of 10-7. Avery and Erika Edmundson followed her in second and third place.

Ivy Smith led the girls in the throwing events by winning the shot put and discus. Smith set a new personal record in the shot put with a throw of 40-3, just about four feet better than her previous best. Jetta Thaete and Alexandra David were able to secure the second and third place spots in the shot put and discus as well.

“This has been such an amazing group to coach. This is a very mature group of athletes and it's been fun taking them places and celebrating their accomplishments,” Brass said.

The Bulldogs will be back in action at the 4A IHSAA Track Field Championships on Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20 at Mountain View High School in Meridian.
