Spartans lose hard-fought district game against Kellogg
OROFINO — Priest River softball fell just short in a hard-fought battle in the 2A district baseball tournament, losing to Kellogg 18-10 at Orofino High School on Tuesday, May 9.
The Spartans fell behind early. After three innings, the team was down 13-0, but started mounting a comeback. The girls put up six runs in the top of the fourth inning to keep things close.
With the bases loaded, Brodie Hansen struck a line drive to left field to get the Spartans on the board in the fourth. Later in the inning, Addison Kingery hit a double to center field to score two more runs for the Spartans. Madilyn Rose kept things going with an RBI single to right that tacked on two more, 13-6 Wildcats.
After giving up four runs in the bottom half of the inning, the Spartans again responded with four runs of their own. Jaylein Zylstra hit a double to center field to score three runs and clear the bases; Kae Brown then hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Spartans their 10th run of the game.
Zylstra filled up the stat sheet for the Spartans going 2-for-4 with two walks, a single, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Rylee Hansen went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored. Also contributing in a big way was Madilyn Rose, who went 3-for-5 with three singles, two RBIs and a run scored.
The Spartans will return a large majority of their roster next season and will look to improve upon their three wins.
