Smith, McDaniel, Lee medal after Day 1 at state championship

After Day 1 of the Idaho 4A/5A track and field state championship at Mountain View High on Friday, three Sandpoint athletes – Ivy Smith, Devin McDaniel, and Rusty Lee – took home medals.

Ivy Smith is officially a state champion in the 4A girls shot put. Smith dominated her competition with a throw of 40-0 on Friday. The second-place finisher was nearly 3 feet behind her. She is set to compete in the discus on Day 2.

Devin McDaniel will take home a silver medal in the 4A girls pole vault. McDaniel vaulted a new personal record of 11-0 on Friday, a height she has been trying to get past all season.

Rusty Lee placed second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the 110-meter hurdles. Lee ran a time of 38.92 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles, his second fastest time ever recorded. In the 110-meter hurdles, Lee ran a time of 14.51 seconds and was just a tenth of second behind his competitors. Lee is set to compete in the high jump on Day 2.

Day 2 of the Idaho 4A/5A track and field state championship will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Mountain View High School.
