Matteson claims the bronze at state solo contest
Sandpoint High School had six choral students who participated in the State Solo & Ensemble Contest at the College of Idaho in Caldwell on May 6.
These soloists earned their way to this contest by receiving either first, second or third place at the District 1 Solo & Ensemble Contest in Post Falls on March 11. Each singer had to perform either an art song or classical aria. The six students who made it to state were Dakota Matteson, Halle Potter, Titus Tucker, Caleb Norling, Sidney Meshberg and Ethan Barcklay.
Halle Potter sang in the alto division. She performed an Italian Aria entitled "Che Fiero Costume."
Titus Tucker performed in the baritone division. He sang an Italian piece called "Danza, Danza Fanciulla Gentile." Caleb Norling sang in the baritone division as well. He performed an Italian piece entitled "Amarilli Mia Bella." Sidney Meshberg and Ethan Barcklay performed in the bass division. They both sang the same song, "Deep River."
There are about 24 singers in each voice division at the state level. All of them performed the required classical music and all of them were in the top three of their respective district competitions.
The Sandpoint singers did very well. Most of them ranked in the top 10 at the state level. Which brings us to soprano Dakota Matteson. This young vocalist performed the Italian Aria "Caro Mio Ben" and brought home a medal. Matteson won third place at the State Solo Contest. She is the third best classical soprano singer in the state of Idaho at the high school level.
