A 22-year-old Spokane man is facing burglary charges after police said he allegedly walked into a family’s home in the early hours of the morning wearing only underwear.

Liam Kelly was found entering through the back door of a family’s home in Sagle at around 3 a.m. Saturday, May 13, wearing nothing more than a pair of underwear, according to court records. When asked why he was in the couple’s home, Kelly gave an answer they were not expecting.

“He said he was Liam Kelly and he recently purchased the home from Elon Musk,” the probable cause affidavit said.

The couple told police that Kelly said he was looking for a key. While they assumed he was looking for a house key, Kelly eventually locked eyes on what he thought was a car key, according to court records. However, what Kelly grabbed actually happened to be a remote that controlled some of the home’s outdoor lighting.

Before exiting the house, court records said Kelly saw the couple’s German shepherd walking around the house, prompting a complaint about the dog.

“[Kelly] said something to the effect of, ‘This dog is not up to my standard,’” the affidavit said. “He grabbed the dog and ushered it outside.”

While the couple went to collect their dog, Kelly grabbed a few suitcases and walked outside to load them into a vehicle parked in the driveway, court records said. The 22-year-old then attempted to start the vehicle with the outdoor lighting remote, but when the vehicle failed to start, court records contend Kelly grabbed a blanket that was sitting in the couple’s carport. Kelly allegedly wrapped himself in the blanket and headed down the road without the suitcases or the car he attempted to steal, according to court records.

He was later found by officers wandering down the road still wrapped in the blanket and was arrested for burglary.

According to court records, Kelly was released to his parents and charges were dropped on the condition he completes mandatory treatment at an undisclosed facility.
