COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Barajas takes down Iowa State wrestler at Grand View Open
Evan Barajas, NIC Men's Wrestling
Bonners Ferry Alumni Evan Barajas secured his first win of the season on Friday at 149 pounds over Kayleb Farris of Ellsworth Community College, 11-3. At the Grand View Open held in Grimes, Iowa, on Saturday, the largest NAIA invitational in the country, Barajas took down Iowa State’s Thomas Freking by decision, 5-2 in Round 2 for his second victory of the season. He also has two other victories due to forfeit so far this year.
Jackson Rickter, Waldorf (Iowa) Men's Wrestling
Jackson Rickter, who also happens to hail from Bonners Ferry, also competed at the Grand View Open this past Saturday. At 197 pounds, Rickter won by fall over Thomas Palmer of Missouri Baptist (4:49) in Round 2. In Round 6 of the consolation bracket, Rickter defeated Ezra Mabe of Jamestown (North Dakota) by fall as well (0:50).
Camille Ussher, Spokane CC Cross Country
Former Badger Camille Ussher finished in third place out of 54 runners at the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships with a 5K time of 19:44. Compared to last year, Ussher finished 30 places higher and improved her 5K time by roughly two minutes. Spokane won the NWAC women’s title with 22 points, finishing 2-3-4-5-8. Spokane’s men also won the NWAC title with 49 points.
Abigail Gorton, Lewis-Clark State College Cross Country
Bonners Ferry alumni Abigail Gorton finished in 25th place at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Cross Country Championships held Friday, Nov. 3, at the College of Idaho. Gorton ran a personal best 6K time of 23:45, 48 seconds faster than her previous best time. LCSC finished third out of nine teams; the College of Idaho women won the CCC title.
Luke McCorckle, Whitworth University Football
Former Sandpoint defensive back Luke McCorkle was able to celebrate with his fellow Pirates on Saturday as Whitworth staged a 14-point fourth quarter comeback to defeat Linfield, 28-24. The win completed an undefeated regular season (9-0) and Whitworth claimed the Northwest Conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Whitworth will play Chapman in the opening round Saturday at noon at the Whitworth Pine Bowl. So far this year, McCorckle has nine total tackles and hauled in an interception during a 63-21 win over Puget Sound.
