Schweitzer pushes back opening day

Schweitzer will push its opening day back due to a lack of snow on the mountain, resort officials said Tuesday.

“Due to limited early season snowfall and challenging snowmaking conditions, coupled with recent temperature fluctuations, the resort has made the difficult decision to push back the opening day to Saturday, Nov. 25,” Schweitzer officials said in a press release. “Originally, the resort had tentatively planned to open Nov. 24, conditions permitting.”

The ski hill’s snow machines are working hard to produce enough snow to get guests on the slopes this weekend, and locals said they’re hoping the mountain will get a few snow storms in the meantime.

"While we may be facing unique challenges this season, the spirit of anticipation and excitement is stronger than ever at Schweitzer," said Tom Chasse, Schweitzer CEO and president. "Our decision to delay the opening by one day allows us to provide the best possible conditions on Midway, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all our guests."

Schweitzer anticipates opening at 9 a.m. Saturday and will continue to operate daily as long as winter conditions permit. On opening day, guests will only be allowed on the Midway trail until closing time at 3:30 p.m. No beginner terrain will be available until the hill gets more snow.

Lift tickets will be offered on-site at a discount rate of $50 for the first day of the year.

“We’re optimistic that our patience for Mother Nature will pay off in the form of abundant snow all season long,” said Chasse. “As we wait for winter to settle into the region, we’ll look for any opportunity to expand lifts and terrain as conditions permit.”
