SANDPOINT — Tim Knight, a Sandpoint resident for over 14 years, was critically injured in a fire, losing his home and car in a matter of minutes.

After returning home Nov. 19 to his camper, where Knight lived, he lit a cigarette unaware his propane tank had a crack, his niece Rachael Patterson said. This caused the camper and his vehicle to be engulfed in flames.

According to social media posts, area residents said they heard and felt a loud boom when the explosion happened.

Soon after a helicopter was dispatched, but due to weather conditions was unable to fly. Instead, crews flew Knight by plane.

“He is currently in Seattle at Harborview Medical Center in a medically induced coma, being treated for the burns covering 50% of his body,” Patterson said on a GoFundMe page she created for her uncle.

Knight, who has received skin grafts, recently came down with pneumonia, Patterson said.

Patterson created the GoFundMe page shortly after the incident to support her uncle’s recovery and help him find a new place to live.

As of Wednesday, $595 had been raised out of a $5,000 goal.
