PREP ROUNDUP: Priest River girls soccer, volleyball capture multiple victories

Priest River 3, Newport 2
NEWPORT — Down 2-1 at halftime, the Spartans battled back to defeat the Grizzlies 3-2 for the second time this season. Lizzie McCracken led the way for Priest River scoring a goal in both the first and second halves.
McCracken struck early for Priest River, scoring off an assist from Pavin Coleman, but Newport was able to score two goals before halftime. However, the Spartans were able to bounce back in the second half.
“It was a very physical second half, but we were able to get the go-ahead goal with about 15 minutes remaining,” assistant coach Nick Tucker said. “We were forced to play one player down for about 15 minutes, and then two players down for about six minutes, but our defense held strong and was able to get the win. We tried out a new alignment tonight and I think it worked very well.”
Marley Burgess-Duquette also scored for the Spartans on Monday. In goal, Brooklyn Best had 10 saves. Overall, the Spartans had 19 shots on goal against the Grizzlies.
Priest River (6-6, 4-0) will host Bonners Ferry on Wednesday.

GRANGEVILLE — Three different Spartans scored in Priest River’s conference win over Grangeville on Saturday.
Katrina Davis, Cheyenne Thompson, and Marley Burgess-Duquette each had one goal to lift the Spartans over the Bulldogs.
“It was a soppy, wet game, and a long bus ride to get there, but we pulled off the win,” head coach Christina Leonard said.

Clark Fork 3, Kootenai 0
HARRISON — The Wampus Cats defeated Kootenai 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-13) on the road in 1A North Star conference play Monday. Statistics and recap were received after deadline and will be mentioned in a future story.
Clark Fork (7-6, 2-0) will face off against Lakeside at home today.

Priest River (5-3, 1-2) will head to St. Maries today to take on the Lumberjacks.

Priest River 3, Genesis Prep 2
PRIEST RIVER — Several Spartans stepped up in Priest River’s 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 21-25, 15-10) victory over Genesis Prep on Friday at Priest River Lamanna High School.
“We came out with the win, but it was a fight,” head coach Katlyn Ward said.
Senior Allyson Barton was out Friday night, but freshman Raygn Turner and junior Paityn Yount stepped up, both excelling at different positions. Turner, who usually plays outside hitter, had 11 kills as a right-side hitter. Yount, who is usually a right-side, played at at the middle blocker position and accumulated three kills and two blocks.
Leading the Spartans on the night was Toni Marinello who posted a season-high 45 digs. Jayda Storro had another great game at setter with 35 assists. Desi Humphrey had a team-high three aces behind the service line. Helena White posted a team-high 12 kills for the Spartans. On defense, Aleigha Jensen led the way with three blocks.

Sandpoint went 3-2 at the Sheridan-Welch Crossover Classic held Friday and Saturday in Spokane.
On Friday, Sandpoint was defeated by Mead 2-0 (23-25, 19-25), but turned things around Saturday morning with three straight victories against Cedar Park, 2-1 (25-23, 22-25, 15-8), Graham-Kapowsin, 2-0 (25-21, 25-21), and Shadle Park 2-0 (25-18, 25-22). The Bulldogs only loss Saturday was against a strong University team, 2-1 (25-22, 17-25, 10-15).
“We had a rough start Friday against Mead, but we turned it around and played more disciplined than we’ve played all season,” head coach Piper Wahlin said. “It was a great weekend. We figured out some things that worked better for us and had a lot of success. Even when it got tough, we looked very controlled and confident.”
Overall, senior Vivian Platte had a stellar weekend performance with 37 kills, five blocks, and five aces. Aubre Lane also added 37 kills of her own; Wahlin said she looked very controlled. Middle blocker Belen Gonzales added 14 kills between Friday and Saturday. Kenzie Eden had five blocks for the Bulldogs, all coming at key moments.
Senior Haley Swaim assisted on nearly every point scored over the weekend, she recorded 114 assists to go along with five aces.
Sandpoint (2-8) plays Moscow today on the road.
