SANDPOINT — It wasn’t until there was 30 seconds remaining that Lake City got on the board and defeated Sandpoint, 1-0 at War Memorial Field on Tuesday.

Sandpoint has defeated Lake City two times so far this season, but the Timberwolves were able to escape the season sweep. During the 80th minute, Kathyrn Kovatch got a shot off just inside the box while closely contested by a Sandpoint defender. The ball bounced off two other Sandpoint defenders before making its way into the back of the net.

“Obviously, it’s a tough loss to swallow, giving up a goal with 30 seconds left in the game,” head coach Conor Baranski said. “It was a strange game in the sense that neither team could ever get a rhythm. We just made a mistake to allow them to get a sloppy goal at the end.”

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs are in good shape as they head into the 4A Inland Empire district tournament as the No. 1 seed with a 7-5-3 record. Overall, the Bulldogs have 38 goals for and 17 against this season, most of the opposing goals coming from Greater Spokane League schools. Sandpoint will face off against Lakeland or Moscow on Thursday, Oct. 12, at War Memorial Field at 4:30 p.m.

1st half – None. 2nd half – 1, LC, Kovatch (unassisted), 80’.

Shots on goal – Sandpoint 2. Lake City 9.

Saves – Sandpoint, Izzy Stark, 8. Lake City, Acaja Scott 2.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint was the second team to score against Lake City this year, and the only team to score against the Timberwolves on their home turf this season as the Bulldogs fell just one goal short to an undefeated Lake City squad Tuesday.

In the first half, one goal was scored and it came from the Timberwolves’ Valentyn Kuzyk off a pass from Connor Jump during the 38th minute, just before the whistle. However, it would not take Sandpoint long to respond.

During the 45th minute, Sandpoint’s Eoin Eddy scored on a scramble in front of the goal line to tie the game 1-1. Eddy’s goal is the only non-set goal (a goal in which play is not stopped) scored against Lake City this year; the other goal was scored on a penalty kick late in the Timberwolves’ 10-1 blowout win over Moscow.

During the 63rd minute Lake City’s Jacob Molina was fouled inside the box and scored on the ensuing penalty kick to help the Timberwolves secure the 2-1 victory. Lake City heads into the postseason with a 13-0 record.

“Lake City has a lot of seniors this year, and sometimes strength and quickness evolves around 17-18 years old,” head coach Tanner French said. “Both sides had opportunities throughout the game. Although it was the correct call, it was unfortunate that a penalty kick decided the winner. There are many positives in a game environment such as this, and we will see it (those positives) again in the coming weeks.”

Sandpoint finishes the season with an 8-4 record and will be the No. 1 seed in the 4A Inland Empire district tournament. The Bulldogs have 46 goals for and just 11 against heading into the postseason, so either Lakeland or Moscow will have their work cut out for them. Sandpoint's first tournament match will be held Thursday, Oct. 12, at War Memorial Field at 6:30 p.m.

1st half – 1, LC, Kuzyk (Connor Jump), 38’. 2nd half – 2, SPT, Eddy (unassisted), 45’. 3, LC, Molina (penalty kick), 63’.

Shots on goal – Sandpoint 3, Lake City 8.

Saves – Sandpoint, Kai Longanecker, 7. Lake City, Benji Valov-Deming, 3.
