New homes, apartments out of reach for most

| October 8, 2023 1:00 AM

Driving around Sandpoint and surrounding areas, I see new homes, condos, and apartment buildings all being built. Who is going to buy and live in all of these new places anyway?

To qualify for one of these new homes being built, you have to show an income of at least $75,000 a year, minimum. To rent a new, two-bedroom apartment, you have to have an income of at least $1,800 a month.

Isn’t this the average income of folks living in Sandpoint and surrounding areas? I think not!

How did all of these out-of-area developers and builders get their permits to build all of these places in the first place? Who paid for these permits anyway? Everyone believes and talks about most politicians being crooks. Has this trickled down to the local level? Geez, I sure hope not.

I remember that not so very long ago, homes and apartments around here were affordable for local residents. What happened anyway?
