Oct. 12, 1973 — SHEEN SETS NIC TALK

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, well-known Catholic orator, will speak Oct. 16 at Coeur d’Alene’s NIJC gymnasium. Free tickets are available from the Catholic parishes of Northern Idaho. The ‘golden-voiced’ archbishop is best known for his long-time television series, “Life is Worth Living,” which in 1956 appeared on 123 ABC television stations and reached an estimated 30,000,000 people weekly.

LIBRARY GIVEN PAINTING

Sandpoint Library is now exhibiting an original landscape by Miss Ethel Ashley. To mark her 91st birthday, the former art teacher presented them with one of her paintings. Born in Denver, Colo. in 1882, she came to Idaho with her homesteading family in 1887. She retired as head of the art department at Spokane’s North Central High School in 1948. She and her sister Lucy, 94, reside at Sandpoint Manor.

Gerald King, U of I professor of military science, awarded a three-year Army ROTC scholarship to 1972 SHS graduate Cadet Emmett William Jones III, 18, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett William (Bill) Jones, Jr.

Oct. 12, 1948 — STUDENT IS HURT

Bill Strandy, 17, route 1, Samuels, suffered two badly cut right fingers Monday morning when a glass blew up during a chemistry class in the local high school. Stitches were required at the clinic.

SOME HUNTERS LUCKY

Among local hunters who have been in successful elk hunting parties recently returned from the Lolo district are: Ben Powell, John Chaffins, W.A. Clark, Harry Johnson, Donald Johnson, Oliver Saunders, Bob Wood, Delbert Weaver, Vern Shadle, Paul Westfall, Harry Hulquist and Wayne Heath.

NINTH BIRTHDAY PARTY

Mark Wendle, son of Dr. and Mrs. C.C. Wendle, celebrated his ninth birthday Tuesday with a party at his home after school. Games were played and a “house of horrors” in the basement enjoyed. Hallowe’en decorations were used about the house. Guests were Jerry Findlay, Jerry Gehlen, David Bockelman, Gary Hall, Bobby Ridgway, Jimmy Abbott, Leland Robinson and Jan Wendle.

Mrs. Harry Johnson [nee Anita Wood], registered nurse, 620 Oak, has opened a day care home for the care of preschool children.
