Supporting students through the One Trusted Adult Initiative
As the superintendent of the Lake Pend Oreille School District, I am excited to share about LPOSD’s focus on student connection, one of the four key areas in our strategic plan. Student connection includes many aspects of engaging with students — increasing academic engagement through hands-on learning, re-establishing attendance expectations to boost achievement, and ensuring all students feel connected to their school environments. At the core of our district’s educational philosophy, the students are our "why" and our highest priority.
This fall, we began the “One Trusted Adult” Initiative. All students in the district identified one trusted adult on staff at their school. Naming one trusted adult in their schools serves as a proactive safety measure for our students. We recognize that parents are the best first teacher and often the initial point of contact for students seeking support, but by having an identified adult at school who students can confide in regarding potential safety issues — such as bullying, self-harm, or acts of violence — we increase the likelihood of students seeking help when needed.
Sadly, I have witnessed tragic circumstances and even the loss of students during my time as a district leader. These experiences have strengthened my deep belief in the importance of ensuring that every student has a designated place to turn to in times of need. I believe the One Trusted Adult Initiative can reassure students they are not alone.
By fostering meaningful connections between students and trusted adults, we are promoting a culture of safety, care, and support throughout our district. The One Trusted Adult concept is an integral part of our commitment to student well-being, their safety, and their sense of belonging. Together, we can build a stronger educational community where every student feels valued.
Thank you for your support.
