BULLPUP XC: Sandpoint girls win district title; Parr-Coffin wins boys race
COEUR d’ALENE — The Sandpoint Middle School cross country team competed at the Large Middle School Cross Country District Championships held at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds on Monday. Sandpoint’s girls, led by Paloma Parr-Coffin, took home the district title. Sandpoint’s boys, who finished second, were led by Miro Parr-Coffin, who won the district championship.
In the girls race, seventh-grader Paloma Parr-Coffin finished the 1.5 mile course in second place with a time of 8:49.6. Sandpoint had seven other girls in the top 20, dominating the competition en route to another district title. Izzy Maltby, Delaney Barron, Sienna Szabo, Sophie Brubaker, Bailey Wilson, Dayami Lopez, and Vivian Schuck all finished among the top 20 out of a field of 113 runners.
Head coach Jake Peterson was impressed with the girls' efforts this season, noting that Barron, Szabo, and Maltby were all consistent scorers, which helped tremendously due to the absence of Sandpoint’s top runner, Ruthie Laughridge.
“The girls dominated all season and have won every meet this season with great depth,” Peterson said. “… We did this in spite of not having our top runner, Ruthie Laughridge, for three of the six meets this year. She has unfortunately been injured for most of the season, but wants to get healthy enough to make nationals on the USATF XC circuit.”
This year’s top runner, Paloma Parr-Coffin, along with Laughridge will continue their season with the North Idaho Distance Project in CDA as they attempt to qualify for nationals.
In the boys race, Miro Parr-Coffin won the district championship by 27 seconds, finishing with a time of 7:20.1.
“Miro has crushed it all season, leading the field by at least 20 seconds every meet,” Peterson said. “He led the boys to a runner-up finish in the district. It was the boys best race of the season and we needed it to edge out CDA Charter for second. Wes Drube, Wyatt Lemon, Landon Connor, and Wyatt Mitchell were consistently the top runners through the season and all ran their best race of the season at districts.”
Miro Parr-Coffin will also continue his season with the North Idaho Distance Project in CDA and attempt to qualify for nationals.
Peterson said that overall the entire team has improved immensely and he looks forward to coaching this same group during track season.
