Questions

  1. In my first 100 days, I aim to prioritize housing affordability, infrastructural advancements, and invigorating local businesses. I have a vested interest in ensuring Sandpoint's growth is both sustainable and beneficial for all its residents. Being the only candidate with children in each level of our public school system, I have unique a hands-on perspective of our town's daily life and its future. While we aim for progress, it's essential that we don't let Sandpoint drift into becoming just a resort destination. Additionally, having contributed to the final stages of our new Comprehensive Plan, I eagerly anticipate its adoption. I invite everyone to delve into this plan on the City's website and actively participate during the public comment sessions.
  2. The three pivotal areas, seen from a father's, business member’s, and a citizen's perspective, include: • Housing Affordability: The steep housing costs obstruct many talented individuals from moving here. • Infrastructure and Growth Management: As our city grows, robust infrastructure becomes even more crucial. • Preservation of Community Identity: We must evade the exclusive label of a 'resort community' and embrace a diverse demographic.
  3. • Housing: By liaising with developers and stakeholders, I aim to diversify housing choices. We should actively consider incentives promoting affordable housing • Infrastructure: We need a comprehensive infrastructure review to pinpoint and address areas of concern. Drawing upon insights from the Comprehensive Plan, I plan to strategize sustainable growth in collaboration with local entities. • Community Identity: I'm advocating for a town-wide dialogue to hear and integrate residents' visions, creating an action plan emphasizing both growth and preservation.
  4. Transparency and active engagement are crucial. I intend to hold regular community forums in our public spaces, ensuring I am accessible to residents. These dialogues will not just be for airing concerns but will be action-oriented, ensuring feedback is translated into tangible solutions. Moreover, promoting respectful and constructive communication will ensure every voice feels valued.
  5. While I appreciate the board's efforts thus far, there's always room for growth and improvement. I’ve been on the Planning and Zoning commission for a bit now, and have been impressed with what city administration has delivered when we’ve asked. Their direction is commendable, especially with the introduction of an encompassing Comprehensive Plan. However, I believe there's opportunities for increased engagement with the community to ensure the board's actions align with residents' visions for Sandpoint's future.
  6. And I’ll say it for the record – I’m a proponent of the City Administrator function – I believe it provides continuity, professionalism, and keeps the board from becoming politicized. Folks want stability – this layer helps.
  7. The pivotal issue in this race is Sandpoint's evolving identity amidst growth. To address this, I'll champion dialogues between residents, businesses, and stakeholders to craft a shared vision. I am committed to ensuring Sandpoint is not just a resort town but remains a vibrant, accessible, and thriving community for everyone.
  8. An issue that I believe deserves more attention is the growing tendency of Sandpoint being perceived as solely a resort community. As charming as it is to be a renowned destination, there's a risk of sidelining young professionals looking to build careers and families here. It's alarming that despite competitive salaries at firms like Kochava, professionals still find it challenging to relocate to Sandpoint. This could alter the town's character over time. We need to begin addressing this, and that starts with a conversation.
  9. Tension often stems from misconceptions. I believe we can mitigate this by encouraging more respectful communication. I commit to engaging with residents more proactively. Our public spaces offer ample opportunity for this – to listen, share, and understand varied perspectives. Let’s remember the value of face-to-face conversations in strengthening our bonds.
  10. The sense of camaraderie and the vibrant spirit of Sandpoint always stand out. Whether it's the bustling Farmer’s Market, taking a boat under the Long Bridge, or the heartwarming community events where you’ll see nothing but smiles, there's a unique charm to this place. These experiences and interactions connect me deeply to the area and its residents.
  11. Living in Sandpoint offers a myriad of opportunities that align with my interests. While lake activities in summer and skiing in winter are go-to activities, I also have a passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, coaching and training at SBA Ponderay. In between, you might find me engrossed in a book, discussing film (80’s horror, anyone?), or honing my carpentry skills. Just like navigating city government, carpentry reminds me there's always something new to learn! (still have all my fingers though)
  12. Absolutely. Being open-minded is essential, especially in a position of governance. In my professional role at Foundry, we work with major brands, helping them make data-driven decisions. When presenting arguments, I bring data to back my stance. If someone presents better data or a stronger argument, I'm always ready to reconsider my position. Engaging in meaningful dialogue not only sharpens my understanding but also fosters collaboration.
  13. Without a doubt, my Dad. He was an embodiment of resilience and calm, having served in both the Korea and Vietnam wars. His even-tempered nature and wisdom have been guiding forces in my life. He died last year - I miss him deeply.
  14. Being "even-keeled" is pivotal. This means listening more than speaking and ensuring that when one does speak, it's factual, necessary, and kind. This balanced approach fosters mutual respect and helps in making informed decisions.
  15. The question should be, “Wave your magic wand – what does Sandpoint look like at the end of your term?” My vision is of a Sandpoint teeming with opportunities for young families, marked by outstanding schools, healthcare, and employment avenues. I'd echo the Comprehensive Plan's aspirations: for Sandpoint to benefit from quality education, a versatile workforce, fair taxes, sensible regulation, and reliable connections. We'd be a community that embraces innovation, supports entrepreneurs, and offers diverse housing options for all income levels. When my wife and I first set foot in Sandpoint in 2006, we felt an instant connection, and decided to make our family here. From Coldwater Creek drawing us here initially to Kochava reaffirming our bond, Sandpoint has been more than just a residence – it's home. I've witnessed the dedication of our educators, been involved with our healthcare system, and participated in shaping the Comprehensive Plan. City Council work may not always be glamorous, but it's crucial. With your support, I promise to bring dedication, meaningful debate, and clear-eyed decision-making to the table. Let’s together shape a brighter future for our beloved Sandpoint. Join me in making a lasting impact.
