Eugene Albert Rumelhart, 90

Eugene A. Rumelhart, 90, of Sandpoint, Idaho, passed away in his home Oct. 25, 2023. 

Eugene was born Nov. 19, 1932, in Baker, Mont. He was a loving father, a caring grandfather, a proud veteran, and lastly, an excellent cribbage player. 

He married Pauline on March 7, 1959, in Cheney, Wash., after his time in the U.S. Coast Guard. He and Pauline lived an adventurous life, living in seven different states. During his time in the Marshall Islands, he touched many lives as an educator. Eugene and Pauline were nationally recognized breeders of award-winning basset hounds. Gene was always good with his hands and was an accomplished woodcarver, an honest fisherman, a gardener, a golfer and a hunter. His children and grandchildren always loved to see his latest projects.  

Eugene was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Sandpoint.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, in 2005. He is survived by his four children, Kathy Alexander of Portland, Ore., Patty Shinn of Denver, Colo., Becky Perry of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Timothy Rumelhart of Sandpoint, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Gene’s funeral will be held at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church of Sandpoint on Nov. 3, 2023, at 10 a.m. for friends and family.
