SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint boys soccer team fell just short, losing 3-2 to Coeur d’Alene on a rainy afternoon at War Memorial Field on Thursday.
The Vikings got out to an early lead after Liam Martin scored on a rebound off Sandpoint goalkeeper Kai Longanecker. Just a few minutes later, Sandpoint would tie things up after a penalty kick goal by Eoin Eddy. However, during the 36th minute, Kason Pintler wove through a couple of Bulldog defenders and scored to make it a 2-1 game before the half.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half. During the 50th minute Eddy had a shot miss off the crossbar, as Sandpoint continued to get quality looks. However, Martin would score again for the Vikings on a penalty kick during the 65th minute. One minute later, Sandpoint marched down the field and scored a goal of their own; Caiden Gion sent a no-look pass to Luke Leavitt to make it a 3-2 score. The Bulldogs would have chances near the end of the game, but could not convert.
“It wasn’t the result we were aiming for, but the last 15 minutes of the game proved that we were able to give 100%,” head coach Tanner French said. “The previous 65 minutes showed a lack of discipline and experience at the varsity level. On a positive note, the boys only gain that experience through playing, and we will build off the determination they displayed late in the second half.”
Sandpoint (2-1) will be back in action against Lakeland on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at War Memorial Field.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Sandpoint girls soccer team was unable to get on the board Wednesday, suffering a 3-0 defeat against Coeur d’Alene at Viking Stadium.
Remi Menier and Kayle Smart scored goals in the first half for the Vikings, who limited the Bulldogs to just four shots on goal. On the defensive side of the ball, Sandpoint’s Lilliana Brinkmeier was outstanding, racking up a season-best 12 saves against the Vikings.
Ella Morton scored Coeur d’Alene’s third goal of the match in the 47th minute to put the game out of reach.
“Coeur d’Alene had a quality game plan and capitalized on our mistakes,” head coach Conor Baranski said. “Two games in two days is too much for us right now. We played hard but were unable to keep up.”
Sandpoint (3-2, 1-1) visits Lake City on Tuesday.

POST FALLS — Taylor Mire compiled five birdies and finished with a score of 77 to lead the Sandpoint girls golf team to a second place finish at the Lakeland Invitational held at the Links Golf Club on Thursday.
Mire finished in second place overall, just one stroke behind Lewiston’s Mollie Seibly. On Monday, Sandpoint’s Alexa Tunistra came in second for the Bulldogs, posting a score of 86. All five Sandpoint girls golfers scored 100 or under on the day, finishing just nine strokes behind Coeur d’Alene.
“Claire Loutzenhiser has been hitting the ball well,” head coach Mike Deprez said. “Once she spends a lot of time on the putting green next week, she will be in the 80s.”
Loutzenhiser shot a 97 on Thursday and has been a pleasant surprise this season for the Bulldogs.
For the boys, Micah Young led the Bulldogs with a score of 84, just a couple of strokes away from being among the top 10 individuals on the day. Logan Roos and Grady Kelly both shot 90s while Cooper Zimmerman posted a 94 to round out Sandpoint’s scorers.
“All the boys' scores show we are becoming more consistent, especially given today’s pin location challenges,” Deprez said. “We’re looking forward to the second half of our season, sharpening our focus while figuring out who the most consistent players are.”
The Sandpoint golf team will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 11, at the Prairie Falls Golf Course in Post Falls.

SANDPOINT — The Coeur d’Alene defense played a large role in the Vikings’ 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) victory over Sandpoint at Les Rogers Court on Thursday.
“We made a point to focus on the energy and feeling on the court no matter what the score was tonight,” head coach Piper Wahlin said. “In that regard, I am very impressed with the girls. Coeur d’Alene has a very disciplined defense that made it difficult for our hitters to score despite our incredible serve and receive efforts.”
In the first set, Sandpoint led 8-3 at one point, but allowed a six-point Vikings run mid-way through, making the score 14-12 Vikings. After some back-and-forth, Coeur d’Alene would take the set 25-22.
In the second and third sets, Sandpoint once again got out to sizable leads, but could not maintain them, falling 25-17 in the second set and 25-16 in the third.
Aubree Lane recorded nine kills and 15 digs on the night for the Bulldogs. Vivian Platte contributed eight kills of her own, while Haley Swaim added 14 digs for Sandpoint.
Sandpoint (4-4) will compete in a non-conference matchup at home against Bonners Ferry today.
