FOREST ENTRY BAN LIFTED

Mother Nature blessed the Sandpoint area with enough rain last week to help that famous bear, Smokey, with his fire fighting chores. The Forest Service and the Department of Public Lands both reported only a few spot fires last week. In addition, the Idaho Commissioner of Public Lands and the U.S. Regional Forester jointly announced that the closing order affecting entry to federal, state and private lands in northern Idaho has been rescinded.

ATTEND TORCH CONFERENCE

Sandpoint TORCH unit members attending the Seventh Annual National Youth Conference of the National Association for Retarded Children in Boise received a trophy for bringing in the most per capita in the state of Idaho in this spring’s Hike-Bike. The national average was 11 cents; Sandpoint raised 38 cents, for a total of $1159. Members attending were Mary DeVries, Wanda Jones, Allison Gilmore, Linda Booth, Ninamae McGuire, Sandy Lund, and Pam Potter. Advisor Mrs. Rose Booth and Mrs. Jo McGuire, who helped with transportation, also attended. Miss Lund was elected state secretary; Miss Gilmore was elected district representative.

Sept. 5, 1948 – AIR VACATION TO ALASKA

O.B. Parker returned from a week’s airplane trip to Alaska in his new Cessna 170, four-passenger ship, with R.R. Shackleton of Newport. They flew north on the inside route, stopping at Lethbridge, Calgary, Edmonton, Fort Nelson, Whitehorse, Fairbanks and then Anchorage, where they visited friends.

PACK RIVER LUMBER TO BUILD

The Pack River Lumber co. obtained a permit to build a $68,000 building at the corner of Church and Second next to its present retail yard. Construction is expected to start soon. The new section, which will face on Second, will be used by the retail yard, managed by J.A. Peterson. The company’s office building is being remodeled to increase office space.
