| September 9, 2023 1:00 AM

A Bonner County patrol K9 has earned recertification, Bonner County Sheriff's Office officials said in a press release posted to the department's social media accounts.

Kai, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinios, is trained as a patrol K9, specializing in tracking, handler protection and article search.

Over the past six years, the K9 officer has provided assistance to the Sandpoint, Ponderay and Priest River police departments, sheriffs offices in Boundary County, Pend Oreille County, Wash., and Sanders County, Mont., Idaho State Police, and the U.S. Marshal's Service.

BCSO officials said Kai has been deployed 73 times and has 22 captures/arrests. Kai was recertified last week by Idaho POST.

"Please join me in thanking Kai and K9 handler patrol Deputy Steve Carl for their dedication to the safety of Bonner County and for the assistance the team has provided to our law enforcement partners," Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler said.
