Raptor class offered next week

| September 22, 2023 1:00 AM

A raptor search and fall birding class will be offered in Libby, Mont., on Sept. 30.

Raptors are now in fall migration, heading south from their breeding grounds, Brian Baxter. These birds of prey utilize thermals and updrafts to help them travel and tend to follow traditional migratory routes.

The community is invited to take part in the Sept. 30 class. Baxter said the class offers an educational and fun birding adventure to search for raptors, waterfowl, woodpeckers, shorebirds, and songbirds. Those interested should met at the Venture Inn, 1015 W. U.S. 2 in Libby, Mont., at 9 a.m. Mountain Time. Participants will quickly go over some birding tips before heading into the field at 9:30 p.m. The class will visit at least three different habitat types in its search for avian species.

Participants must register to attend. This is an adult-class only; no children or pets will be allowed. All levels of birders are welcome. Participants are asked to come prepared with full gas tanks, proper clothing wearing natural colors or camouflage, and footwear appropriate for short hikes on private lands less than 3/4-mile round trip. Bring lunch, water, binoculars, spotting scopes, and field guide books.

The class will be held rain or shine.

"This is not an e-bird instruction class, but rather focuses on utilizing your own powers of observation and proven identification methods," Baxter said.
