PREP GOLF: Young, Sandpoint girls qualify for 4A state championship
MOSCOW — The Sandpoint girls golf team is on its way to the state championship after winning the 4A district title at the University of Idaho Golf Course Thursday. For the boys, Sandpoint’s Micah Young is also headed to the state championship after finishing third overall at the district championship meet.
Sandpoint girls finished 1-2-3 en route to the district title. Taylor Mire is this year's girls 4A district champion, she shot an 87 for the gold medal Thursday. The Bulldogs’ Raegan Samuels took home a silver medal (89) and Alexa Tuinstra captured bronze (92). Overall, the team scored 368 to defeat Moscow and Lakeland. Also a part of the state-qualifying team are Demi Driggs and Claire Loutzenhiser.
“This course has fast greens and very challenging pin placements, which is a sharp contrast to recent greens we have played on,” head coach Mike Deprez said. “The girls are all close, we just need to sharpen what we have rather than search for something.”
For the boys, Sandpoint finished in second place Thursday, defeating Lakeland but falling short of Moscow. Micah Young finished third overall, scoring an 85 to solidify a spot at the 4A state championship. Cooper Zimmerman finished second for the Bulldogs and tied for eighth overall with a score of 92.
“I’m also very proud of all the boys; the one's who played today and the one's on varsity who pursued playing today. There are about 12 varsity boys,” Deprez said. “The boys are right where they should be in terms of quality swings and commitment. They are young and our time will come in 2024 and 2025 with that continued commitment. However, the girls time is now. It will be a fun focused week next week.”
Young and the Sandpoint girls golf team will compete at the 4A state championship, hosted by Moscow, Oct. 6-7 at the University of Idaho Golf Course.
