Lewiston 3, Sandpoint 1

SANDPOINT — The Bulldogs fell to Lewiston 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 20-25) at Les Rogers Court on Thursday on senior night. Despite the loss, Sandpoint and the six Bulldog seniors who took the court gave it their all.

Sandpoint started out strong, taking a 10-6 lead over the Bengals, eventually capturing the first set by a two-point margin. In the second set, the Bulldogs were once again able to get out to a healthy 13-7 lead, but Lewiston mounted a comeback and won the second set by two points. In the third set, things got interesting.

The Bengals scored 10 points in a row in the third set to take a 10-3 lead, but thanks to some key kills from Taylor Payne, Belen Gonzales, and Vivian Platte, Sandpoint mounted a comeback. The Bulldogs led 18-15 at one point, but were not able to hang on, falling 21-25 in the third. In the fourth set, the Bengals were able to get out and maintain a lead to capture the 3-1 victory.

“We’re improving in all areas, but keep coming up short...,” head coach Piper Wahlin said. “We had control of the match in the second set; we need to figure out how to hold onto that. Six of our seven seniors got to play tonight, but I just wish it had been a different result for them.”

Leading the seniors was Platte who amassed 14 kills and 21 digs. Aubree Lane racked up 14 kills while Payne added seven kills of her own. On defense, seniors Kenzie Eden and Olivia Owens each had blocks and combined for five kills on the night. Senior Haley Swaim did everything she could Thursday night for Sandpoint, accumulating three aces and a season-high 42 assists.

Sandpoint (2-8) will be compete at the Sheridan-Welch Crossover Classic held in Spokane this Friday and Saturday.
