Volunteers to clean up shores on Earth Day
SANDPOINT — Multiple locations in Sandpoint will see cleaner shores in their future thanks to a clean-up event celebrating Earth Day on Saturday.
City Beach, lower Sand Creek, and the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail will all be cleared of trash to prepare for summer. The event is hosted by the Idaho Conservation League and the city of Sandpoint.
A group of volunteers will clear the shorelines and waterways of any trash in preparation for summer.
Karissa Huntsman, North Idaho community engagement specialist, said last year’s volunteers found a variety of items, including a horseshoe and barrel.
“We often find car parts that seem to have flown off of vehicles driving over the bypass,” she said.
Depending on the weather, between 30 and 75 individuals have shown up to clean-ups hosted in prior years.
“We are expecting a nice sunny morning on Saturday, and hope to see many community members there,” Huntsman said.
For those interested in participating, registration is encouraged but not required. Volunteers can check in at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Sandpoint City Beach Pavilion. Clean-up will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bags, gloves, and refreshments from Evans Brothers will be provided. This is a great volunteer opportunity for families, groups, and businesses. Registration is not required but is encouraged to help us with our planning.
“Our goal is to give volunteers a chance to make a positive impact by cleaning up shorelines, making them safer and cleaner for both people and animals,” Huntsman said.
