April 23, 1974 – LAND OFFERED FOR SCHOOL

A new high school south of the long bridge may well become a reality, after Dale Thisted publicly stated he would contribute 40 acres for such a project at the last Bonner County Planning and Zoning commission meeting. The school board has been considering the possibility of building a new four-year high school on the south side of the long bridge, though no definite plans have been made.

BUILDING DESTROYED BY WEEKEND FIRE

A fire of unknown origin destroyed a storage building and burned 50,000 board feet of lumber at the Arrow Tie Mill in Ponderay Saturday. A logging crew discovered the blaze about 8 a.m. All four Northside Fire trucks responded to the fire, but only 10,000 feet of lumber was saved, much of it charred beyond use. Mill owner Larry Donnerberg said the building was uninsured. He also said construction of a new building will start immediately.

MEEKS SHOWS MORE IMPORTS

Mrs. Charles Hines, owner of Meek’s Antiques and Used Furniture in the Eagles building on First, received a new shipment of English furniture and collectibles from the Liverpool area. She purchased the merchandise on a recent visit to her native land. Meek’s Antiques has more than doubled its display and storage area, leasing the old bowling alley from the Eagles. A doorway was cut between two long basement rooms for the customers’ convenience.

April 23, 1949 – MALE QUARTETTE

Four Sandpoint men with a mutual interest in music, had an enjoyable winter, entertaining several local groups. The quartette, composed of Weston Brunsell, bass; Leonard Bockelman, baritone; M.O. Sanford, second tenor; and Paul Delamarter, first tenor, formed last fall. Sponsored by the V.F.W. this season, they hope to build into a community men’s chorus. They have sung at V.F.W. gatherings, the Elks, the Civic Club, Kiwanis club, Martha chapter, and with the Methodist choir in their Easter cantata.

WATCH WHERE YOU DUMP THAT RUBBISH!

Spring comes. Snow melts. The yard looks run down after a long winter. Cans, bottles and rubbish clutter the place. Out comes the rake. Soon the premises shine. A self-satisfied feeling assuages the ache of strained muscles. But WAIT! Don’t drive out into the country and dump that litter on a peaceful sylvan roadside. “Dumping rubbish along either state or county highways is a misdemeanor,” Sheriff Robert Ellersick warns. “Violators are subject to a heavy fine.” The city dump on west Pine is the proper place to dispose of the winter’s refuse.
