Two annual bike rodeos are scheduled in the cities of Sandpoint and Ponderay next week.

The events will feature a bike safety check with minor repairs, and a chance to learn about bike safety and practice skills, Erin Billings, Lake Pend Oreille School District Safe Routes to School coordinator, said.

The first rodeo will be held May 3 at Parkside Church, 423 N. Lincoln Ave. The event is free and will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Pre-registering is not required. The city of Sandpoint, LPOSD Safe Routes to School, and Pend Oreille Pedalers are sponsoring this event.

There are a limited number of free helmets for kids who do not have one while supplies last. For questions or additional information relating to the Sandpoint bike rodeo, contact Billings at 208-263-2184, ext. 1124.

The second bike rodeo will be held at McNearney Park, located on Dustarr Lane, behind the Better Together Animal Alliance in Ponderay on Saturday, May 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by the city of Ponderay, LPOSD Safe Routes to School, Pend Oreille Pedalers, and first responders.

Ponderay officials invite community members to bring their families to the park for the festivities. Kids should bring their bike or scooter and a helmet, if they have one. Those without helmets, or whose helmets no longer fit, may be able to receive a new one for free thanks to event sponsors, while supplies last. Local first responders will be available to help families safely fit the helmets on site.

This free event will also include a community barbecue hosted by the city of Ponderay. Community members are invited to join the city for lunch.
