Nothing seems 'elementary' with entertaining 'Sherlock'
Teresa Pesce’s original play “Sherlock” asks some good questions and then answers them in a fun, mostly fast-moving, quirky way.
Sherlock Holmes (Eric Bond) seems to be wasting away in retirement, but Mrs. Hudson (Miriam Robinson) and Mrs. Perl (Kate McAlister) find a way to lure him out of his malaise — with a murder. Or is it suicide? Or is it either, for that matter? Those are the questions, and the answers are not easily found.
Dr. Watson (Cory Repass) seems to know as much about the case as anyone, and maybe even more than Sherlock and Inspector Lestrade (Andrew Sorg). There are very funny moments in dialog, especially between Holmes, Watson and Sherlock’s brother Mycroft (Scott Gossett).
The cast carries the play well, and Bond rocks the lead role, though there are moments when the audience fears he might strangle himself with his own scarf. And who knew Sherlock knew how to finger-pick a violin?
Matters get very complicated toward the finale. Still, the truth is out after a half-dozen plot twists, an opened coffin and a late appearance by Professor Moriarty (Michael Bigley). But one is left wondering at the end … well, you might want to see for yourself.
“Sherlock’s” final performance at the Panida is tonight at 7:30 p.m.
