THE CRYSTAL BUTTERFLY

The southwest corner of First and Main has blossomed into The Crystal Butterfly, Sandpoint’s newest women’s clothing store. Part of its name came from former Idaho Gov. Don Samuelson, also a skilled lapidary, who with his wife Ruby, suggested “crystal” to owner Barbara Gooby. Crystal alludes both to longevity and to the fact that Idaho is the Gem State. Mrs. Gooby came up with the “butterfly.” Entering the shop is like walking into a floating pink cloud. As vibrant pink shag caresses your feet, you find yourself staring into a funky barn-board outhouse. “We’ve combined a little old with the new,” said the owner. “We have the old wooden outhouses for dressing rooms.” As if all the fine fashions and accessories weren’t enough, Mrs. Gooby pulled the coup-de-gras by hiring one of Idaho’s most experienced women’s clothing experts – Ernestine Daniel – to manage the shop.

TRIBUNE HAS STORY ON PEND OREILLE

A feature about Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille that appeared in a recent Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune brought a flood of vacation inquiries to the chamber of commerce. Harry Templeton of Illinois, who plans a move to the lake area this summer, sent a copy of the article, writing: “Congratulations on a fine piece of publicity in the Chicago Tribune. The Sunday Tribune has a circulation of 1,500,000, so a great many people will learn about the good fishing around Sandpoint.”

NEW TENNIS COURTS OPEN!

A group of high school students under the supervision of Coach Cotton Barlow put the finishing touches on the two new tennis courts at the high school [102 Euclid Avenue; in 2024, the Sandpoint Business & Events Center]. The students swept off the surplus from the seal coat applied on top of the asphalt surface put on last fall. The courts were rebuilt by the Sandpoint Recreation Council and are for public use as well as for the high school. They are open to any players who care to use them.
