Thomas Lawton McFarland, 86

| August 2, 2024 1:00 AM

Dr. Thomas McFarland, aged 86, was born and raised in Colfax, Wash. After graduating from Colfax High in 1956, he attended the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. Many of his most cherished memories were created there, including membership in the Sigma Chi fraternity and meeting his beloved wife of 63 years, Jeannine Wood McFarland. While there, he discovered his passion for education. He continued his enrichment by earning a master of arts degree at the U of I, and a doctor of philosophy from Washington State University. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, he influenced thousands of students in his roles as teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent.

In retirement, he had more time to devote to his studies of history, politics, and economics. Recently, he had taken up bike riding and was frequently seen crossing the Long Bridge in Sandpoint, Idaho. His outgoing personality often brightened the days of those he encountered. Tom was known for his mischievous sense of humor, beautiful singing voice, generosity, and lifelong friendships, especially with his fraternity brothers.

Tom was preceded in death by his loving parents, Lawton and Elsie McFarland. He will be greatly missed by his surviving family, including brother Charles, wife Jeannine, and three daughters and their families: Wendy, Mark, and Erik Joplin. Teddi, Andy, Alex, Itze (LaMadrid), Channing, Kiersten, and Ailsa Bolt. Amy, Nate, Katie Clairmont-Nelson, Bryce Nelson, and Cory Clairmont. He was excited to recently welcome his first great-grandchild, Nova Nelson.

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages remembering Tom by donating to your local food bank.

Family and friends are invited to sign Tom’s online guest book at www.coffeltfuneral.com.
