City recognized for welcoming spirit
Sandpoint has been recognized as one of the nation's most welcoming locations for newcomers, according to a survey by a national website.
ElectricityPrices.com ran a survey of 3,700 seasoned travelers to reveal the most welcoming destinations in America for out-of-towners.
The Bonner County community came in at No. 36 in the survey.
The goal, website officials said, was to highlight the nation's unsung heroes — towns where warmth and friendliness are the cornerstones of the community — the types of places where newcomers can expect to be embraced with open arms, and where the essence of hospitality creates unforgettable experiences.
The top five cities listed in the survey were Stockbridge, Mass.; Winterset, Iowa; Elsah, Ill.; Fredericksburg, Texas; and Bandon, Ore.
Idaho is home to three of the nation's 150 most welcoming locations for newcomers, with Sandpoint leading the list. Also named to the list from the state are Driggs at No. 117 and McCall at No. 137.
In the survey, Sandpoint was noted for its outdoor recreation opportunities and friendly community. The Sandpoint Winter Carnival and the Festival at Sandpoint were among the items cited as helping create a welcoming atmosphere where newcomers can feel at home.
