YOUTH SPORTS: Sandpoint Albion SC teams battle it out on Field of Dreams
PONDERAY — On July 30, surrounded by a beautiful sunset, Sandpoint Albion Academy 2013-14 boys faced off against Albion’s newest team, the Premier 2010-11 boys, in what was deemed as the first soccer game to be played on Bonner County’s newest sports complex, the Field of Dreams.
The Academy youngsters rose to the challenge with Keldon Ridley scoring the first goal just two minutes into the game. The Premier 2010-11s found their composure and created multiple scoring opportunities, but the Academy youngsters preserved their 1-0 lead going into halftime. The Academy youngsters even came close to adding to their lead on a few technically efficient counter attacks led by Jacob Moren, Will Hawn and Mathew McDaniel.
Albion Premier’s halftime adjustments paid off, however, with surgical passing in the attacking third. Baden Asquith capitalized for the Premier 2010-11s, tallying two goals. Wyatt Fenton and Dalton Trudeau also netted goals to build the Premier’s lead to 4-1.
“We found success with creating high percentage chances inside the penalty box and won the physical battles in front of the net,” Premier 2010-11 coach Isaac Bentson said. “The Academy boys surprised us and have many players that can score at any time. It was a great growth experience for both teams.”
The goal of the match came at the ending whistle with a technically perfect combination play with Ridley combining with Kit Gaddess and Garrison Markwardt to feed Griffin Asquith, who lofted a 20-yard shot just under the crossbar for Albion Academy’s second goal in the 4-2 loss. Albion coaches said Gaddess, Felix Carlson, and Raleigh Brown played at a very high level.
“We’re proud of our boys’ effort and attitude.” Academy 2013-14 coach Jennings Waterhouse said.
