County needs to work with BTAA to help stray dogs

| August 18, 2024 1:00 AM

It recently came to my attention that Bonner County is in the process of renegotiating its contract with Better Together Animal Alliance to intake and subsequently care for stray dogs.

I am concerned about the care and management of these dogs going forward if this contract is not renewed.

Bonner County is required by Idaho State Code to "seize and impound stray dogs and ensure their humane treatment." If Bonner County commissioners choose not to renew the county's contract with BTAA, then how will the stray dogs in our community be cared for until they can be reunited with their families?

The Better Together Animal Alliance is by far the best qualified and equipped to continue this important work on behalf of dogs temporarily on the run, and their adoring families.

The staff members at BTAA are uniquely qualified and the shelter facility is uniquely equipped to take in dogs who are at large in our community and care for them until they are returned to their owners.

If the contract with Better Together Animal Alliance is not renewed, what viable alternative does Bonner County have in mind? As citizens of Bonner County, we deserve transparency and a detailed plan in advance of the contract renewal deadline.
