Aug. 29, 1974 – DEPOT BLOCKS BYPASS
“We’re caught in a bureaucratic squeeze,” said one person describing a meeting of county residents with Dr. Merle Wells of the Idaho Historical Society, trying to find a way around a blockage of a highway bypass for Sandpoint. Bill Watkins told Dr. Wells he was told by the State Highway Board that as long as the Burlington-Northern railway depot is on the Federal Register of Historic sites, there will be no consideration of work on the bypass. “We’d like to know how the depot got on the register in the first place,” he said. Answering a question from Mayor Les Brown, Wells said “there is no procedure to get a building off the register once it is on.” Attendees voted to write Idaho’s representatives in Congress to ask their help in taking the depot off the register.
