SANDPOINT — A new exhibition by artist Teresa Rancourt pays homage to nature.

The Pend Oreille Arts Council's 2024 Artist of the Year, Rancourt titled the exhibit "Nature, My Muse." The exhibit will run from Sept. 6-30, with an opening reception Friday, Sept. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at the POAC Gallery, 313 N. Second Ave., Sandpoint.

Teresa Rancourt is an abstract mixed-media artist whose work is deeply inspired by the natural beauty of North Idaho. Living in the tranquil Selle Valley with unobstructed views of the Cabinet and Selkirk mountains, Rancourt said she draws from her experiences in the diverse ecosystems that surround her. Her work captures the essence of the lakes, rivers, mountains, and skies of the Idaho Panhandle, bringing to life the profound connection she feels to the environment.

“Nature is truly my muse,” Rancourt said. “My work is an expression of deep feelings about a place in time, an experience I have had in nature. I paint from within, allowing the piece to speak to me as it takes form.”

Rancourt’s work is characterized by bold marks, vibrant colors, and layered textures that evoke a sense of movement and depth. Each piece is a journey, a reflection of her emotional connection to the land and water that have shaped her life and art. From high mountain trail rides to snowshoeing in the winter, every moment spent in the outdoors influences her artistic process.

Claire Christy, POAC arts coordinator, admires Rancourt’s work.

“Teresa Rancourt was chosen as POAC's Artist of the Year because of her passionate and prolific approach to painting. Her work comes from a place of deep self-awareness, and if you've ever spoken with her about her process, it's clear that she truly knows herself," Christy said. "This self-knowledge translates into her art in a way that is both rare and admirable — something that most artists, including myself, aspire to achieve. When I view her paintings, I imagine myself shrunken down, navigating through her abstract landscapes. The layers of color she uses are a true pleasure to the eye, drawing viewers into a world that feels both intimate and expansive.”

The public is invited to attend the opening reception Sept. 6 and all works are available for purchase.

The Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in Sandpoint and the surrounding area. Through exhibitions, performances, and educational programs, POAC supports local artists and brings enriching cultural experiences to the community.
