Fall fishing derby ends

SANDPOINT — The Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club’s fall derby came to a close Sunday, Dec. 1. While official results are yet to be released, unofficial results are in.

Derby organizer David Gillespie thanked everyone who participated in this year’s derby and said official results should be posted by Friday, Dec. 6.

In the second half of the derby, Jeff Hoagland was able to hold off all challengers to take first place in the adult rainbow division with a 26.30-pound, 23 1/4-inch fish he caught and released on day two.

The rest of the adult rainbow podium spots changed in the second half of the derby. Finishing in second place was Scott Brow with a 23.60-pound, 38 1/2-inch catch he released; narrowly edging out third-place finisher John Ross who caught and released a 23.45-pound, 36 1/4-inch rainbow.

In the adult mackinaw division, Dale Greene who was leading at the mid-point of the competition also held on to his lead, finishing in first place with a 12.40-pound, 32-inch mackinaw. Finishing in second place was Bryan Beno with a 9.40-pound, 28.75-inch catch in the second half of the derby. Missing second place by a tenth of a pound was Steven Belgarde who reeled in a 9.30-pound, 29-inch mackinaw in the second half of the derby to take third place.

Lyla Shelton finished in first place in the junior division, having caught and released a rainbow that came in at 18.5 pounds, 33 inches on day three. Behind her was Benny Dobowsky with an 18.30-pound, 35-inch rainbow he caught and released in the second half of the derby, bumping Fisher LaRue — who was in first place on day two with a 17.20-pound, 33 1/4-inch rainbow he caught and released — into third place.

In the youth A division, Ember Shelton unseated Savannah Long in the second half of the derby to finish in first place by reeling in and releasing a 33-inch rainbow. Long finished second with a 32 1/4-inch rainbow she released. Behind Long was Lane Low in third place having caught and released a 31-inch rainbow.

Tucker Shelton and Dalton Belgrade held on to their first and second positions, respectively, to finish the competition; both caught rainbows coming in at 30-inches. Stealing a spot on the leaderboard in the second half of the derby to finish in third place was Rory Bonner who landed and released a 29 1/2-inch rainbow.
