PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Priest River fends off Newport for border-battle victory

NEWPORT — Four different players reached double-figures as the visiting Spartans used a big second half to pull away from the host Grizzlies for a 65-43 victory on Saturday on Newport High.
Senior Palmer Coleman had 12 points, seven assists and two blocks, junior Ian Lamanna 12 points of his own, all of which came from behind the 3-point line. Senior Nate Stifel added 11 points and eight rebounds, senior Sawyer Staudt 10 points and two steals to help the Spartans, which led by just nine points at halftime, to the win.
Senior Carter Cook registered nine points and seven rebounds, junior Lucas Mathews six points and six rebounds for Priest River (2-0), which will look to stay hot when Coeur du Christ of the North Star League comes to town on Wednesday.

LEWISTON — At the Diamond Shop Classic Showcase held Saturday at Lewiston High, Sandpoint High sophomore Logan Iverson tallied a team-high 12 points but the Bulldogs fell to last year's 1A D2 (now 2A) state runner-up Tigers 46-39.
Down 21-14 nearing the end of the second quarter, Iverson hit back-to-back 3-pointers and sophomore Knox Williams, who had six points and five assists, found junior Kingston Corbett underneath the basket before the halftime buzzer sounded to put the Bulldogs ahead by one point.
Kendrick responded in the second half, leading by as much as nine points, and held Sandpoint to just seven points in the final frame.
Corbett finished the contest with eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks, junior Logan Roos five points and five rebounds, senior Wil Leisy three points and six rebounds for Sandpoint (0-2) which returns to action Thursday at home for a non-league match against St. Maries.
