PREP BASKETBALL: Priest River boys, girls both score league wins over Orofino

BOYS BASKETBALL

Priest River 66, Orofino 59

OROFINO — Senior Nate Stifel scored a team-high 19 points and the visiting Spartans took their first lead midway through the second quarter and never trailed again en route to a 66-59 3A Central Idaho League win over the Maniacs Saturday.

Senior Carter Cook registered eight points and pulled down 11 boards, senior Palmer Coleman eight points and six boards while senior Brock Kreager scored eight points, six of which came from beyond the arc, for the Spartans, which trailed 10-1 to start the game and took a 25-24 lead with 4:34 to go in the second quarter — a lead they never relinquished.

The Spartans outrebounded the Maniacs 36-19 and also got scoring contributions from junior Ian Lamanna, who had seven, junior Brady Hatten and senior Sawyer Staudt, who both had six, and junior Lucas Mathews, who rounded out the scoring with four of his own.

Priest River (5-0), which has won five straight, will look to keep things rolling when they travel to Kellogg Thursday for another league matchup.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Priest River 41, Orofino 30

OROFINO — Junior Aleigha Jensen notched a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds and drained three 3-pointers as the visiting Lady Spartans rallied late to pick up a 41-30 3A Central Idaho League win over the Maniacs Saturday.

Senior Desi Humphrey added 10 points, nine steals, and was 6-for-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch while senior Paityn Yount and sophomore Haylee Jepson scored seven points apiece for the Lady Spartans, which trailed 21-17 at halftime.

Orofino High senior Rilee Tiffin had a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Maniacs, which were limited to just nine points scoring in the second half. 

Senior Lizzie McCracken had two points, a team-high three assists and three steals for Priest River (5-1), which will host Riverside Monday for a non-league contest.
