COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint High senior Jorden Tyler may not have achieved his goal of winning the 190-pound bracket of the Tri-State Tournament held Friday and Saturday at North Idaho College, but he accomplished something only a few legendary Bulldogs have been able to add to their resume.

Tyler, after picking up three wins by pin on day one, won by a 7-5 decision in the semifinals over Asa Knutson of Hanford to qualify for the championship match.

Tyler is the first Bulldog finalist at Tri-State since Casey Randles won the tournament in 2016. Randles, who competed for the University of Wyoming, was a three-time Idaho state high school champion for Sandpoint and Coeur d'Alene, is in the Idaho chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and was the Idaho Wrestler of the Year as a senior back in 2017.

Awaiting Tyler in the championship match was Seth Martin of Post Falls. Martin, who ended up pinning Tyler in 2 minutes and 39 seconds, is a recent North Idaho College commit and was a 5A (now 6A) state champion at 170 pounds last year.

Tyler and Martin hadn’t wrestled each other in the previous two years.

“I didn’t know what to expect going out there,” Martin said in an interview with the Coeur d'Alene Press. “I just tried to do my best and wrestle funky and praise to the Lord. I like weird moves that nobody uses that much and try to have fun during my matches.”

“I wrestled him a while ago, but he’s changed and I’ve changed,” Tyler said. “It was amazing to see the different styles going.”

“I think it went off amazingly,” Tyler said about the start to his season. “I can’t wait to see where it goes.”

In addition to Tyler, freshman Ty Wood was sixth at 98 pounds for Sandpoint after picking up a 6-2 win by decision in the consolation quarterfinals over Collin Christman of Lake Roosevelt.

Senior Colm McLaimtaig, who is now 9-1 to start the season, was third at 144 pounds for Priest River. After falling in the semifinals, McLaimtaig picked up two wins in the consolation bracket to clinch third, winning by an 11-8 sudden victory over Evan Urann of Mead and pinning Gunnar Whitlock of Lewiston in 2 minutes and 18 seconds.

The Bulldogs and Spartans will meet on Tuesday at Priest River High for a dual.
