Dec. 19, 1949 – BENOIT CAR HIT BY TRAIN
Tuesday at 1:53 o’clock, Bud Benoit had a breath-taking escape from serious injury when the car he was driving collided with a freight train on the S.I. tracks at the Church street crossing. Benoit was proceeding east on Church and, because of icy conditions, had slowed to about 20 miles an hour as he approached the crossing. “A clear view of the railroad crossing is obstructed by buildings,” Benoit said, “and a person must be within 15 feet of the crossing before it is possible to see if a train is coming. Some kind of warning is needed there and at the Oak street crossing.” As soon as he saw the train, Benoit put on the brakes but they did not stop the car at such close quarters and in the head-on collision that followed, his car was dragged about 25 feet down the track. The car was struck on the driver’s side and Benoit was able to jump out the right-hand side before the engine stopped. He was not injured, although his car is badly wrecked.

SKIERS CALL FOR PINE ST. HILL WORK
The last week’s snow has skiers getting the itch to get on their boards and try them out. Jack Shields, J.R. McFarland and Ward Tifft last Sunday surveyed the west Pine street ski hill and tentatively chose a site for this year’s new towline, which will be both longer and larger. Cox Implement co. is tuning up the tow for top performance. All skiers are asked to turn out Saturday with axes at Pine street hill. Considerable help will be needed to clear the hill and set up the tow for use the balance of the winter.
